Neuromonics®
Tinnitus Treatment
This is a new treatment for tinnitus that is recommended
in preference to hearing aids for many people, particularly
those whose hearing loss is mild or outside of the aidable
range.
People
who find their tinnitus especially disturbing in quiet times
or who have significantly reduced tolerance to loud sounds
may also find the Neuromonics® Tinnitus Treatment a
preferable treatment option.
The Neuromonics® Tinnitus Treatment
has recently been made available by Neuromonics™ Ltd,
following its success in clinical trials. It involves the
use of individually customised acoustic therapy in conjunction
with education and ongoing support from an audiologist who
specialises in tinnitus treatment.
The acoustic therapy consists of spectrally modified music
that has been individually tailored according to each person’s
hearing and tinnitus characteristics.
Over a period of
several months, individuals listen to their prescribed
acoustic stimulus for two to three hours per day and
have regular progress assessments.
Early in treatment, benefits reported are enhanced relaxation
and the ability to sleep as well as relief from tinnitus.
The therapy provides an intermittent stimulus that masks
the tinnitus and facilitates desensitisation leading
to reduced awareness of and disturbance from tinnitus.
