Swimmer’s ears - how to avoid them.

Exostosis is a common problem with Sydneysiders.
It is a bony growth that
develops in the ear canal, thought to be due to cold water exposure. It’s a bit like having corns on your feet but inside your ear canals!

Exostosis does not necessarily affect your hearing but may cause ear infections - water from the sea
or swimming pool gets trapped inside the ear canals, allowing bacteria
to grow.

Bondi Junction audiologist Celene McNeill advises that the best way to prevent this problem and still enjoy swimming is by using custom made
earplugs. These keep the water out of your ears as they are moulded to the contours of the ear canal for an excellent fit. Ready- made, bought
over the counter earplugs, do not always provide the best seal.

Healthy Hearing & Balance Care can provide you with a range of custom
made earplugs.
