Mal debarquement (MDD)

Mal de debarquement syndrome is a condition where the person has a phantom self-perception of movement, often likened to the sensation of being on a boat. The sensation is more prominent when a patient is not moving, such as lying down or standing still. These symptoms are not uncommon in healthy individuals, lasting a few seconds to a few days following a ship cruise for example. However, in MDD, symptoms can persist for months to years. The most common triggers are water-based activities. Other less common triggers are plane flights, or sleeping on a water bed.
